What does the COP28 Host Status Mean for the UAE?

The recently concluded Glasgow UN Climate Change Conference ensured that the host nations are selected for the upcoming years. Egypt bagged the 2022 hosting bid and the UAE won the COP28, 2023 bid. The Asia-Pacific group of nations unanimously endorsed the UAE’s bid. What does the host status mean for the UAE? Let’s analyze.

UAE – Host Nation for COP28, 2023

UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) & COP

Due to the rising human interference with climate changes, 154 nations signed a Draft in 1992 to establish UNFCCC. Headquartered in Bonn, the UNFCCC’s first implementation of measures is the Kyoto Protocol.

Signed in 1997, the Kyoto Protocol asked for a commitment from the nations to reduce their greenhouse and artificial CO2 emissions to address global warming. To ensure the implementation, every nation would sit for an official meeting every year called COP – Conference of the Parties.

UAE – Winning the Bid

UAE submitted the bid to host the COP28 and the Asia-Pacific nations backed the UAE’s bid. It is a historic moment for the Emirate nation as it has been exploring alternative, renewable, and clean energy for its future.

In 2021 alone, the nation endorsed many sustainable power projects which focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.

  • An eco-green tech research site established in Sharjah is working on developing solutions that enable the use of more green technologies.
  • The ‘Net-Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative’ was announced to make the Emirate free from greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • The third phase of the largest single-site solar park in the World, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has been inaugurated.
  • A landmark deal has been signed between Adnoc and EWEC to supply nuclear and solar energy-based power supply.
  • More Mangroves are planted in the Jubail Mangrove Park to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Winning the bid is an appropriate way of honoring the breakthrough attempts to reduce global emissions by the UAE government. After bagging the bid, the UAE Ministry mentioned that the experts will be exploring solutions to limit increase in global temperature.

Only by addressing these issues, we’d be leaving a healthier planet for our children.
